RICHARD CLAYDERMAN ROMANTIQUE TOUR

Synopsis
With his lush and sophisticated instrumental approach to pop music, Richard Clayderman’s albums routinely sell millions of copies and his concerts are quickly sold out. Ballade Pour Adeline is the greatest hit of all time, with 22 million singles sold - even more than It’s Now or Never by Elvis Presley!

Richard Clayderman is a classically trained pianist who enrolled in the Paris Conservatory of Music at the age of 12. Four years later, he was placed first in a piano competition at the school. Despite his classical background, Clayderman opted for popular music when he launched his professional career. Touring as an opening act for French rock musician Johnny Hallyday introduced him to an international following. Clayderman's debut album, Ballade Pour Adeline was recorded at the urging of producers and composers Oliver Toussaint and Paul de Senneville in 1977, sold more than 20 million copies and was distributed in 38 countries. Touted as the “Prince of Romance”, Clayderman promises to rope in the romantic piano tunes in his live concerts.

He has a vast discography of well over 200 albums and enjoyed an upsurge in mainstream popularity, in the part of the classical crossover explosion era. His 2013 album for Decca, Romantique is arguably his highest-profile release ever - featuring a mélange of film music, pop and light classical standards, and a re-recording of his best-known tune, "Ballade pour Adeline".

The shy Frenchman never intended to be a performer - let alone become a superstar. Today, his distinctive piano reinterpretations of familiar tunes from every era and genre are still heard in every corner of the world. Whether we know it or not, his music has become the soundtrack of our lives. Catch him at the MasterCard® Theatres, Marina Bay Sands.

Princely Treasures from the House of Liechtenstein

venueExhibition Gallery, Basement
date27 Jun 2013 - 29 Sep 2013
time10am - 6pm, daily

Collected over 500 years, over 90 masterpieces from the exquisite art collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein will be travelling to Singapore for the first time. This exhibition is exemplary of the highly cultivated choice in art, with artworks ranging from paintings, prints, tapestries, sculptures to rare decorative art objects. Significant works by important Flemish artists like Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, as well as those by other renowned European masters such as Raphael and Lucas Cranach the Elder, will be showcased to celebrate the High Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-classical and Biedermeier that span from the late 15th century to the mid 19th century, all of which characterise the European way of articulating authority, power and wealth of the ruling houses.

In addition, a selection of 16 oil paintings from the National Collection will be displayed to draw links to the art of portraiture in Singapore’s historical context, exploring how it was an important representational mode between the late 19th and mid 20th century.

Jewels of art history

The Princely Collections contain major works of European art spanning five centuries and are among the most important private collections in the world. Dating back to the seventeenth century, they are rooted in the Baroque ideal of princely patronage of the arts. For generations, the House of Liechtenstein has consistently nurtured this ideal, systematically adding to the collection’s holdings in keeping with an active acquisitions policy which continues to this day.

Today the Princely Collections contain some 1'700 paintings with masterpieces from the early Renaissance to the Austrian Romantic era, including works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Raphael, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Rembrandt and Friedrich von Amerling.

One of my favourite pieces in the Princely Treasures exhibition, was this Automaton. I was fascinated by the fact that this beauty was a mechanical piece of ingenuity.

They were popular in Europe through the Renaissance, all the way up to the 18th and 19th century. And this example is actually a drinking vessel!

I was amused that while we play drinking games like "five-ten" - people of the time used to play a game called Trinkspiel with this automaton.

This clockwork drinking vessel was created in 1610/1612 by Joachim Fries, and was acquired by Prince Hans-Adam II in 2009.
