The Princely Family of Liechtenstein, one of the oldest and
wealthiest noble familes in Europe, has spent the last 500 years
collecting some 1,700 beautiful masterpieces from across the globe.
From art dating back to the early Renaissance to the Austrian
Romantic era, the collection - that started as a hobby and grew to be a
fortunate investment - includes works by the likes of Lukas Cranach the
Elder, Raphael, Peter Paul Ruberts, Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals,
Rembrandt, Ferdinand Gerog Waldmuller and Friedrich von Amerling. For
the first time, an impressive selection of 91 of these masterpieces from
the Liechtenstein Collections were flown over to Singapore and the
"Princely Treasures from the House of Liechtenstein" exhibition was
assembled in a record three days by the National Museum of Singapore.
Launched with an opening cocktail event on June 26, His Serene
Highness Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein - Prince Alois Philipp Maria
- graced the event. The exhibition presents works dating from the late
15th century to the mid-19th century with representatives of High
Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-classic and Biedermeier art styles.

One of my favourite pieces in the Princely Treasures exhibition, was this Automaton. I was fascinated by the fact that this beauty was a mechanical piece of ingenuity.
They were popular in Europe through the Renaissance, all the way up to the 18th and 19th century. And this example is actually a drinking vessel!
I was amused that while we play drinking games like "five-ten" - people of the time used to play a game called Trinkspiel with this automaton.
This clockwork drinking vessel was created in 1610/1612 by Joachim Fries, and was acquired by Prince Hans-Adam II in 2009.
