An outstanding family drama set in fascinating and exotic Morocco.
After
the worldwide success of NOWHERE IN AFRICA, Oscar-winning director
Caroline Link returns to Africa for her latest feature film EXIT
MARRAKECH. The film headlines newcomer Samuel Schneider and Ulrich
Tukur, stars of Oscar winners THE WHITE RIBBON and THE LIVES OF OTHERS.
“It’s very much about feelings, moments, situations and atmosphere.
Morocco is the third protagonist.” (Caroline Link).
On the eve of his seventeenth birthday, troubled teenager Ben (Schneider) flies to Morocco to meet his estranged father Heinrich (Tukur), a successful German theatre director staging a play in Marrakech. There he unintentionally confronts Heinrich with his past and his neglected responsibilities. After falling out with Heinrich, Ben loses himself in the shadowy medina and sleazy nightclubs of Marrakech, where he meets a feisty Berber girl Karima and follows her to her remote village in the Atlas Mountains. He enjoys freedom in this very foreign land until the police and parent finally track the “missing person” down. Ben and Heinrich, once reunited, take a road trip of sorts into the uncharted restoration of their relationship.
Cinematographer Bella Halben’s widescreen lensing presents a textured, warm, and richly coloured version of Morocco and its breathtaking and expansive landscapes. A travelogue, a road movie, a touching fable.
